BOLSENA LAKE: This lake is situated in the northern Lazio, in the main caldera of the volcanic group Vulsinio, it is an elliptic shape. With a surface of 114.5 square km., max depth 151 m. and a boundary of 43 km.; from it emerge two isles: Bisentina and Martana, probably residual volcanic products. It is mainly fed by raining water and there are numerous tributaries with just one effluent: Marta river that has its source from the port of the homonymous village and it flows into the Tirreno sea. On the fertile shores, in addition to oak and chestnut woods, alternates farming of vines, olives and vegetables. Furthermore, more frequently and visible from the coast, there is the “anomaly wave”, originally inexplicable, it presents itself very big and quickly increases strongly till breaking down on the coast. The fishes in the lake are still numerous in spite of the professional fishing and the wrong scattering of infesting fry; the eels, already known by the Roman, are quoted by Dante in the Divine Comedy. Further than these fishes, in the lake nowadays are: Coregonus, luces, perches, trout perches, tenches, carps, scardola (here wrongly called lasca). And at the end the little latterino, always quarry of pillager fishes or aquatic birds. The presence of aquatic birds, especially migratory, is high because of the feed’s abundance and the protection given to them; it’s fantastic for the people who love birdwatching finding a paradise near to home but for the fishermen is a trouble. The fishing boats are very peculiar and always the same from a long time ago; they have asymmetrical oars, the front one only propulsor, the back one acts interlocking also as steering-wheel and the fishermen use them standing. Nowaday the oars have been replaced by little engines; the first one was born on July 23th 1884 when a steamboat was been launched from the Bolsena’s dock. On the lake’s shore a lot of small restaurants have been increased, often they lie in old fishermen’s huts and we can taste lake’s fishes’ dishes. The inhabited centres, full of history, either on the shores or on Volsini mountains, crowning the Bolsena lake, are very hospitable with a hotel’s receptivity now restricted, assured for the moment just from the summer campings, the rented rooms, flats and the increasing agriturismo. THE CLEANEST LAKE IN EUROPE: Thanks to the association CO.BA.L.B among the communes situated on the lake, the commune of Bagnoregio and the provincial administration of Viterbo, the Bolsena lake results to be provided with a purification system for the waters that the communes introduce in the lake making the bathing pure over than 90%. The water-conditioner, through a manifold around the lake (about 30 Kms length), picks up the waters of the communes and it transports them to itself where they are treated. The lifting stations are 17, situated along the run of the collector and each of them pumps sewages first with pressure up to the point of disconnection where the sewages fall for gravity up to the following lifting station from where they are thrown again with pressure. Every station is completely underground and furnished with an own electric feeding box, with a backup pomp and with an automatic generator. In case of breakdown because of anomaly of the system or emergency, a telecontrol system will signal to the specialized technicians the problem. The water-conditioner is situated on the banks of the emissary Marta river and it is a biological purification plant with primary sedimentation and aerobic discharge of the muds and it is able to treat sewages for 40.000 inhabitants. At the end of the treatment and of purification’s process the water, that result to be perfectly purified within the limits of the chart «A» as enacted by law, is introduced into the Marta river to end then its run in the Tyrrhenian Sea. The purification plant is modular and thanks to this characteristic it is useable in different periods of the year according to the big or small sewages’ influx.
